Welcome to Austin Independent School District (AISD) Assistive Technology Services

Throughout history, the personal challenges created by disabilities have inspired the invention of technology. Today, we refer to these accommodations as Assistive Technology ( A T ).

While Instructional Technology tools are used in the instructional process to impact learning for many or all students, Assistive Technology tools are any tangible item that students with disabilities rely upon in order to increase, maintain, or improve their functional capabilities in areas such as:

What is Assistive Technology?

To be eligible for Assistive Technology, a student must have an identified disability that is either recognized under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2004 (I D E A), or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Assistive Technology services relate specifically to Assistive Technology tools.

How Can Assistive Technology Benefit Students?

The integration of Assistive Technology into instructional programs can support the participation, communication, and productivity of many students who would otherwise be unable to benefit from educational opportunities.

It is important to note that for people without disabilities, technology makes most things easier, but for people with disabilities, it can make most things possible.
