A flyer will be distributed to all incoming 6th graders to BMS in February with all of the dates and information about joining band. Please note that we can have only a certain number of students on each instrument so come the the first testing date you can - sections will fill up quick! We want as many students as possible to play their first choice instrument.

We are so pleased that you are considering joining the Bedichek Bobcat Band! We have created this page in hopes of answering some of the more commonly asked questions and to give you a feel for what our program is about.

If you have already been tested and placed on an instrument you should have received a packet with all of the information concerning instrument brands/models and required accessories. If you have lost your copy, you may print it out again from here. Please DO NOT purchase any items until you have been tested on the different instruments by a BMS band director.

What do you mean by "instrument testing"?

Every student is physically built differently; some students have small hands, or thin lips, or a flat chin. Our goal is to place each student on the instrument that fits his or her build. Students will be MUCH more successful if they are playing an instrument that fits them. When students are set up to be successful from the beginning they are more likely to enjoy band and stick with it. Back to top.

What if I've never played an instrument before?

No problem! 99% of our incoming 6th graders have never played an instrument before. We will teach you everything you need to know! Back to top.

Can I be in band and another activity? (i.e. athletics, choir, cheerleading)

Yes! Many of our current band members participate in more than just band. All of the teachers and coaches here at Bedichek are very flexible and will help you arrange your schedule so that you are in the right place at the right time. Back to top.

How do I get an instrument?

If you are selected to play flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or percussion you will need to find an instrument through a reputable music store. The two closest music stores to Bedichek are Strait Music and Gott Music. Through them you can either buy an instrument or rent an instrument.

If you are selected to play Oboe, Bassoon, French Horn, Baritone (Euphonium), or Tuba Bedichek will provide you with an instrument for $25.00 a semester (total of $50 a year.) Back to top.

What do I do if I want to play drums?

Students interested in playing drums must come to get tested on drums and at least one "back up" instrument. Again, we want each student to be placed on the instrument that fits them best; the instrument that each student will be most successful on. Once most of the incoming 6th grade class has been tested on the instruments a decision will be made as to which 8 students will be placed in the 6th grade drum class. Students who have been selected to play drums will be contact by the last day of school, May 25th. If you are not contact by May 25th then you will be placed on you "back up" instrument. Back to top.

What instruments can I choose from?

Incoming 6th graders have the option of playing Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone (Euphonium), Tuba, and Percussion. Back to top.

Do I need to do anything over the summer before I start band in 6th grade?

We ask that you have your instrument and all of your supplies by the second day of class in the fall. Please don't wait until the last minute to go by one of the music stores to pick these items up! Back to top.
