At
Bedichek, we believe that music education plays
an important role in the development of children.
Students learn a higher level of self-expression
and an ability to use their intellect and imagination
to experience great joy when they make and understand
music. Students who participate in music experience
higher academic success and positive peer associations.
Research has proven that music students are scoring
20-40 points higher on the SAT exams. Music students
learn the skills of concentration, alertness,
memory, and self-control, which are basic for
succeeding in life. Music uses the same reasoning
process as science and math. Studying music can
help lead children toward a happy and prosperous
life by honing these mental tools: Creativity,
communication, critical assessment, commitment,
and discipline. Music education offers children
an opportunity to experience self-worth by developing
their talents.

The Bedichek Band Program has a long history
of continued success at contests and festivals.
We are very proud of the hard work and dedication
our talented students exhibit during rehearsals
and performances. Students who join the band
have the opportunity to play any of the following
instruments: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone,
Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium,
Tuba, and Percussion. Students do not need
to have any prior musical knowledge or instruction
to learn to play an instrument and be a part
of the band at Bedichek. Band students are
taught how to read music and all of the fundamentals
they will need during the first year of band.
In their second and third years, they participate
in several concerts and individual and group
contests and festivals.

The Bobcat Orchestra
Program
Director Michael Werst
The Orchestra program at Bedichek Middle School
has a long history of excellence in performance
and competition. Bryan Peacock was the first director
at Bedichek in 1978. Two years later a young violinist
from Lubbock, Sally Banks-Juvenile, took control
of the program. Mrs. Banks-Juvenile led the Bedichek
Orchestra Program until 1997, when her student
teacher, Priscilla Tamez, took over the group.
In 1998, Ms. Tamez focused her full attention
on the Crockett High School Orchestra and former
Bedichek student and current director, Michael
Werst, took the helm at his alma mater. Throughout
the years, these directors have upheld the highest
standards regarding education and music. For 24
years the Bedichek Orchestra Program has participated
in the U.I.L. Concert Sight Reading Competition.
The Orchestra has received superior ratings in
all but three years of its history. Orchestra
is available to any student at Bedichek Middle
School that is interested in playing violin, viola,
cello, or string bass. Participation in orchestra
teaches confidence, awareness, appreciation, leadership,
teamwork, personal achievement, growth, poise,
and attention to detail. |
