Arrival/Dismissal Safety Reminders

Getting over 675 Davis students to school and home again every day poses many logistical challenges. When over 400 of these students are dropped off and picked up by cars in the east drive, strict adherence to traffic safety procedures is critical. Please take a few minutes to carefully review the information below, which outlines procedures that have been developed with the safety of students foremost in mind, and secondly to optimize the flow of traffic.

General Reminders:

  • The east drive (accessed from Bull Run) is the only designated drop-off and pick-up location. The drive in front of the school is NOT to be used to drop off or pick up any students.
  • Arrival: When the incoming lane splits into two lanes, both lanes should be used for drop-off. Staff and safety patrol are present to assist students when exiting onto the median and crossing at the crosswalk.
  • Dismissal: 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students wait on the median, and should be picked up in the lane closest to the median.

  • When waiting in line to drop off or pick up children on the east drive:

  • Make sure children enter and exit the car on the curb side of the car, which may mean obstacles (such as car seats) need to be moved or children need to climb over/under them. It is dangerous for children to exit into the open drive where cars are moving and may not see them.
  • When dropping off children, follow the signals of staff and safety patrol students to pull forward as far as possible, leaving no gaps in front of you. It may result in your child walking a little further, but will help immensely with the flow of traffic. This allows us to unload the maximum number of cars at the same time, which reduces the wait time for those in line, and allows all students to get to class more quickly.
  • Stay in your car at all times, ready to load or unload children quickly. When arriving, students should be prepared with their backpacks and lunch to hop out of the car in a safe and quick manner.
  • Refrain from creating a second incoming lane from Bull Run. Cars should remain in a single lane until the lane splits into two lanes at the median. Once you are in the pick-up and drop-off area, refrain from lane changes and do not create a third lane of traffic for passing.
  • Adhere to 5 mph speed limit while moving through the car line.
  • Watch out for pedestrians and keep crosswalks clear. Pedestrians in the crosswalk always have the right of way. Make sure to pull all the way past the crosswalk, so your car does not block the crosswalk.
  • Do not talk on cell phones while in the car line. This is distracting and creates unsafe situations for our children.

  • All staff and volunteers on the east drive will work to communicate and enforce these procedures. Please be safe, cooperative, and courteous. With all of your efforts, we will make great strides in improving our arrival and dismissal traffic situation. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we all work together to keep our children safe.

At this time, we are also reviewing our current arrival/dismissal procedures and planning for changes that will enhance safety and traffic flow for next school year. If you have suggestions, please let us know!  Contact Jenny Daniels, Assistant Principal, at 414-4139 or jennifer.daniels@austinisd.org.

    Davis Library Fundraiser

The Davis Library needs funding. For the past year, I've been hashing out a plan to assemble written works by Davis students into an Anthology, to be published on Smashwords and Kindle. Both e-publishers have agreed that it is doable.

By now, most families have access to e-readers or e-reading apps on their computers or handheld devices, providing a built in audience for such a project. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles can purchase and download a book featuring their favorite student. The children will have committed to something greater than themselves, and know what it is to see their work published.

What I know we need, so far:
  • A timetable
  • A piece of writing - poem, essay, fiction or journal entry, from each Davis student
  • Cover art (and possibly illustrations)
  • A snappy title
  • Tech savvy assistance with formatting and uploading (we have permission to use the computer labs, if necessary)
  • A bank account to receive the funds

  • What I believe will be helpful:
  • One parent per class to collect and collate the student offerings
  • At least one other person able to edit (minimal - mistakes are half the fun at this age -- think 'Kids Say the Funniest Things')
  • One individual with an accounting background
  • At least one individual who knows advertising. I believe we have two weeks to sell our product, and the goal is $5,000.
  • Please contact me at kindraven@gmail.com with any interest, queries or suggestions. I will be setting a meeting for early June to formalize our plan and welcome feedback.

    Divission III Math Pentathlon

Congratulations to our Division III Math Pentathletes and Coach Teresa Clement! The Pentathletes did SUPER at their tournaments this year! The contestants performed at such a remarkable level. Everyone can be so proud of their manners and sportsmanship - they accomplished a high goal set by Dr. Hall.

Division III Davis Pentathletes:Nikhil Bernier, Matthew Caplovitz, Tosh Gilbert Cabaceira, Julianna Hays, Alleen Koenig, and Allison Manning Lorino. We would also like to recognize Liam Clarke and Zack Faulkner who practiced all year with the team, but who were unable to attend the tournament due to illness. All these students should be recognized for their determination to go above and beyond in their pursuit of academic excellence in Mathematics. Thank you also to our parent volunteers who make Math Pentathlon possible. We had many parents who helped with practices, tournament, and organization! Thank you all for providing the rich and collaborative environment at Davis that helps our children reach their greatest potential.

Parent Connection - Parents can View Child's Grades & Attendance On-Line

Thanks to Parent Connection, an new AISD service at all AISD campuses, parents can now view their child's grades and attendance record on-line. At Davis, our goal is to have 100% of parents on Parent Connection.

Parents of students in grades 3-12 can view assignments, current grades, and attendance records. Parents of students in kindergarten through 2nd grade can view attendance records and report cards. Parents can also set 'triggers' - automatic emails that are sent when a grade falls below or raises above a parent chosen level. This immediately alerts parents when a child is improving or having trouble with a subject.

All AISD parents received a letter informing them of how to access the new service, along with a personal identification number (pin) that will enable them to view their child's records. If you no longer have your pin for your student, contact Ms. Reyes, Davis Registrar, at 414-2580.

If you have any questions about Parent Connection or need help setting up your account, please contact the office at 414-2580.
