Lego Robotics

Lego Robotics Club at Kiker is specifically designed to enhance children’s problem solving and creative thinking skills. Students enrolled at Kiker who are in 4th and 5th grades are eligible to participate in this club. The club members design, build, program and present their own Lego robot creation. Students then compete in an Austin tournament to complete tasks preset by the First Lego League. (www.firstlegoleague.org). The club is run solely by volunteer parents who coach the teams after school, until the tournament. The club runs from September thru January. The club size is limited to the number coaches who volunteer for teams. (Coaches are trained by our 3M Contact, Dawn Muyres) Each team requires 2 coaches. We are proud that our first year will begin with 10 coaches, 45 students (9 per team), which translates to 5 full teams.

After tournament, the robotics kits move to the 5th grade classrooms for those students to continue designing, programming and building in a smaller, team atmosphere.

This club’s inception was made possible because of a generous grant from the 3M Corporation, the Kiker PTA and the Administration at Kiker. For more information, please contact Angela Schuckle (aschuckle-at-earthlink.net) or Vandana Mallempati (chak_y-at-yahoo.com), Lego Robotics Club organizers.

Math Pentathlon

Teacher Contact: Betty Greene

The Mathematics Pentathlon problem solving games provide a highly motivational format for developing and practicing important mathematics concepts and skills. While playing those games in cooperative groups, stu- dents in grades 1-5 strengthen their strategic thinking and critical reasoning abilities. At Kiker, Mrs. Greene, Ms. Bredl and a team of parent volunteers will be sponsoring the Kiker Mathematics Pentathlon Club. Students in 1st through 5th grade are eligible to participate in this program. The Pentathlon Club will meet various Monday evenings beginning in January 2008 from 6:30-7:30 at Kiker. Students will learn the fun games in division age groups led by parent volunteers. Members of Math Pentathlon are eligible to participate in the Texas area tournament held in Austin. Each student should have a parent volunteer who is willing to learn one of the games and help supervise at the tournament. If you are interested in learning more about math pentathlon, you can visit http://www.mathpentath.org, contact Jeanna Crow at jeannac_at_alumni.utexas.net or Mrs. Greene.
