ACCOLADES!

On Saturday, November 15th, LBJ's amazing percussion line shocked the percussion world of Texas with a major upset -- they won FIRST PLACE at the "LoneStar Drumline Contest" sponsored in Dallas at the Marcus Stadium. There were 26 groups in our division, And yes!... LBJ won First Place! According to LBJ Percussion Director, Tyler Dempsey, this is not just our band's first Lonestar Championship, but it is likely the first LoneStar championship in AISD. Congratulations to the band, the directors and the families.

18 LASA students paintings are in Viva Vibrante! at Austin's Mexican American Cultural Center. Organized at the invitation of the MACC, these student paintings showcase the influence of Mexican American art in their own work. You can read all about this exhibit in the November 12th edition of The Liberator. Special thanks to LASA art teachers David Beckham and Nell Blokkum!

The Quiz Bowl team competed in the Southwest Regional ACF Fall tournament in Norman, OK over the weekend. ACF Fall is a the largest collegiate quiz bowl tournament of the fall semester, with over 100 teams taking part at seven mirror sites in the US and Canada. LASA was one of only a handful high schools in the nation to compete in the tournament this year, and the only high school at our regional site (consisting of LASA, three teams from OU and a team from Langston University). Our team won the regional, clearing the field of college teams with a perfect 8-0 record. Benji Nguyen was the third individual scorer in the tournament, placing just below two members of the OU team. Despite the small size of our regional, this is quite an accomplishment for our young team, and is a testament to their depth of knowledge and to the diligence with which they have studied over the past year.
