Transfer Requests

Mathews Elementary is proud of the fact that we accept transfers from around the city and some from outside of the district. We believe that our transfer students contribute to Mathews' well-roundedness and that all of our students benefit from our diversity.

It is important for families considering a transfer to be in agreement with these basic standards that Mathews has for all students and families:
  • We believe it is essential that students start the school day on time. To that end, and largely to accommodate families who drive from other parts of town, we have instituted a daily morning assemblyat 7:35 a.m. By getting students into the routine of a start timeof 7:35 a.m., even when there is a traffic delay, students will not missout on class time. Families who demonstrate habitual tardiness (arrival after 7:50 a.m.) or absences will have their transfers revoked.
  • Students will regularly receive homework and will be expected to make academic efforts during the school day. In some cases, students may be referred to the Homework Center or Saturday TAAS Camps; we hope that all transfer families will accept these offers of extra support as a necessary means to gain academic success for all children.
  • Diversity and harmony do not always co-exist peacefully. Because we have students from around the city, state, country, and world, there are naturally many different values and world views at work. Children (indeed, all of us) need to learn to accept these differences and to appreciate different perspectives. This takes work and does not come about overnight, especially for students who are new to this setting. Conflicts between students of different backgrounds are not uncommon, and rather than gloss over differences, we try to highlight the different perspectives that students may bring. Please understand this work as a necessary condition to get to a higher level of appreciation and understanding.
  • Finally, we would like all Mathews families to get involved in our school's daily life. We have a multitude of volunteer opportunities and our PTA contributes in many ways to the betterment of our school. We promise to find a way to match your interests, skills, and time to a contribution that will help us! When students see parents take an active role in school life, they tend to be more comfortable and successfulin that school setting. The education of every child is truly a joint venture.

We encourage all prospective transfers to contact the school for a guided tour and an appointment with a school staff member(in all likelihood, the Principal or Assistant Principal). Please call 414-4406 if interested.
