VASE: The McCallum Visual Arts Department would like to congratulate this year’s 2007 Visual Arts Scholastic Award (VASE) winners. The all day event was held at AUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL this past Saturday FEB. 17th. From McCallum there were a total of 140 student works entered and judged. 95 students earned a top rating of a “4 Superior” receiving a GOLD MEDAL and 17 of those works were chosen by the 70 jurors to advance to the state level that will be held April 14th in Clear Lake, Texas.
Sholastic Art And Writing Awards: In addition to several exhibitions each year, our art students have two annual competitions. At this year's first competition, the Scholastics Arts and Writing Competition, each member of our art faculty is permitted to submit work for 12 individual art students who must be academically eligible to compete. Two students' works received the highest overall assessment, "Best in Show" called the American Visions Award. These works will go on to New York for national judging.

The top rating a student can be awarded is a GOLD Key, with Silver Key the second in ranking. Those works receiving a GOLD key are sent on to New York for national judging. 22 student art works received these top awards.
Young Masters Program: The Young Masters Program, sponsored by the Texas Commission on the Arts, is intended to encourage talented young Texas artists. Recipients receive a scholarship for up to $2,500 a year, to be renewed for up to three years. It is intended for Texas students from 8th to 12th grade; it is not intended for college study. The scholarship enables the recipients to pursue advanced artistic study through summer intensives and special unique training opportunities. Sarah Crowe and Sarah Welch, visual artists, are recipients of this award.
Scholarships: Sarah Welch was accepted at the Art Institute of Boston with a $30,000 Deans List Sholarship. Congratulations Sarah!
