Orchestra Awards, Honors and Kudos

2007-2008

UIL ORCHESTRA CONCERT AND SIGHT READING CONTEST-APRIL 16-17: The McCallum Non-Varsity Orchestra received straight "ones" in both concert and in the sight reading room from all the judges on April 16 at Anderson High School!  Each judge was impressed with how well these students performed very difficult pieces, and they then performed a challenging piece beautifully in the sight reading room! The following day, the McCallum Varsity Orchestra performed their amazing concert, receiving straight "ones" for a superior performance.  After which, they too, received straight "ones" for a flawless sight reading job.  Each judge gave a superior rating

UIL Full Orchestra Concert and Sight Reading regional competition: The MFAA Varsity, Full Orchestra earned sweepstakes honors during the UIL Full Orchestra Concert and Sight Reading regional competition at the Round Rock Performing Arts Center. To earn sweepstakes honors, an orchestra has to receive first-division ratings in both the concert and sight-reading competition. Orchestras compete against a standard and not each other in the UIL format, with a three-judge panel in each competition scoring performances.
The Non-Varsity Full Orchestra also competed under the direction of Matt Ehlers and Ricky Pringle earned a perfect score in concert competition with a program of Rimsky-Korsakov's Dance of the Tumblers, Orpheus in the Underworld by Offenbach and Finlandia by Sibelius. The Non-Varsity Full Orchestra received a second division rating in sight-reading.

Bass Players Perform at State Orchestra - McCallum string bass students Luke Stence and August Dennis  joined their director, Ricky Pringle, in San Antonio for the 2008 Texas Music Educators Clinic/Convention. Sophomore, Luke Stence performed with the Symphony Orchestra and Senior, August Dennis, for his third consecutive year, performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra.

McCallum Orchestra Students Earn 35 Gold Medals - McCallum FAA Orchestra students earned 16 First Division Ratings in Solo, 2 First Division Ratings in Ensemble at the UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest with 13 students advancing to UIL State Solo & Ensemble Contest in May at the University of Texas.

CONGRATULATIONS TO LUKE STENCE & AUGUST DENNIS ON MAKING ALL STATE ORCHESTRA!!! Luke and Ausgust will be traveling with our music teachers to San Antonio for the 3-day TMEA Convention in February.  Way to go Bass Players!

2006-07

  • McCallum Bass Players, August Dennis and Robert Sherwood advanced to All State Orchestra which will perform at the TMEA Clinic/Convention in San Antonio this coming February 2007.
  • McCallum String Players Make TMEA Region 18 Orchestra! (Oct. 2006) A record-breaking number of McCallum Orchestra students (9) were selected by audition to perform in the Region 18 Orchestra. This is the first year the Orchestra has been represented in each section. Those students are:

    • Caitlin Coughlan (Freshman) Viola
    • Kelsey Martin (Sophomore) Cello
    • Natalie Phillps-Perkoff (Senior) Cello
    • August Dennis (Junior) Double Bass (First Chair)

    • Robert Sherwood (Senior) Double Bass
    • Robert Buckles (Sophomore) Double Bass
    AISD students compete with players from area high schools, and AISD made a very good showing, placing 32 out of the 69 chairs. The Region Orchestra Concert will be Saturday, November 18th, 4pm , at Westlake High School.
