Greetings

The month of May ushers in a busy closing series of Academy events. Details are in the articles with times and locations on the calendar of events to the right. We hope you will support these events with your attendance at an art opening; a concert production of the musical theatre show Once on this Island; a May 11 Mother's Day orchestra collaboration featuring jazz artist, Pamela Hart; a May 18 fundraiser to send our classical guitarists to perform at an international music conference this summer, with featured young artists of Mother Falcon, and spring concerts the week of May 13-19. Then, join in the fun on May 20 at Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

The year culminates with the May 30 Graduation Convocation for Academy seniors. Guest speakers for the event are Dr. Tom Burritt and Dr. Douglas Dempster from the University of Texas College of Fine Arts. Music for the ceremony will be provided by an Academy Alumni Ensemble of singers and percussionists.

Reflection: The Miracle of the Fine Arts Academy is kin to the story of Stone Soup. You the FANLetter readers have worked closely with us to build the McCallum Fine Arts Academy. In just a few weeks, I will retire from this position. I have spent half of my twenty-nine years as an arts educator working at McCallum.

I just returned from my Hendrix College reunion after being away for decades. It was easy to recognize former classmates, and the strong bonds of friendship were amazingly intact, yet no one could easily navigate, or believe the fabulous changes to the campus. So although we’d read alumni magazines and knew our alma mater had maintained an excellent reputation, it took being there and having a VIP tour (that’s a tour for old people!) by current students, to get the real picture.

I’m very nostalgic as I prepare to step away from the McCallum Fine Arts Academy community. A few of you and I embarked on this journey together fifteen years ago. Most others we met along the way. And I cherish our associations with one another. Those dedicated to fulfilling the dream to build this school (not only facilities, but faculty and curriculum; partners and funders) know that we began and continue to operate with limited resources for the academy program that was envisioned for McCallum and Lamar Middle School back in the mid-90’s. And there are divergent views about the Academy’s organizational structure. Though all would agree that students at McCallum should be fed an arts rich diet, virtually none of the ingredients were provided by the district initially. But progress toward reaching ever expanding goals reminds me of the story of Stone Soup. http://www.dltk-teach.com/fables/stonesoup/mtale.htm

The moral: By working together, with everyone contributing what they can, a greater good is achieved.

I invite you to come back to campus during May to attend at least one or two Academy events. There is no substitute for being on campus to see the physical changes and addition of arts facilities and experience our students’ work. The students, faculty and staff of MFAA need the continued support of community and arts partners, university and business partners, trustees, district and community leaders ----all are friends of the Academy.

Here’s the last appeal I’ll be making to you from my post: Come back to campus during May. Bring others with you to our May events, particularly supporting those that are fundraisers (see below). You need to see our campus and see our students’ work. I will be there and look forward to thanking you personally for the contributions you made to further the development of this program. You will fill ‘our house’ and our hearts, for our bonds of friendship are still intact, and we share in the success of McCallum Fine Arts Academy.

Grace and Peace, Lanier Bayliss

Choir News

What a year! The Choral Department at MFAA has been very busy throughout this year--from the first Region Choir Contests in October through the performance in June in NYC at Lincoln Center.

The year began with over 65 students auditioning for the Texas Music Educators Association Region Choir. Fifteen members of the McCallum choir were chosen to participate in the Region Choir Concert in San Marcos in November. In subsequent auditions, Corina Santos was chosen a member of the TMEA All-State Treble Choir and performed with that group in San Antonio in February.

“The Road to Broadway” was the theme of Cabaret 2011. This production was the first time that Cabaret was presented in the brand new theater. Record crowds attended the show featuring the 150 members of the McCallum Choral Department. The MAC provided an incredible venue for the spectacle that is Cabaret.

Soon after the Choral Department prepared for its Winter Concert which featured the McCallum Orchestra and the choirs in a performance of several movements of the Mozart Requiem. The choral department would like to thank the orchestra and Mr. Pringle and Ms. Shockley for their assistance throughout the year in working with the choirs.

The Spring Semester began the first in a newly begun Distinguished Artist Series with a performa nce in the new MAC by Bob Schneider. Mr. Schneider performed to a sold out crowd and helped raise funds for the travel scholarship fund for the McCallum Choral Department.

The semester continued with UIL Solo/Ensemble Contest at the end of February. McCallum Choral Department hosted its first choir solo/ensemble contest at McCallum and ended with 18 singers qualifying for the Texas State Solo Ensemble Contest in May at the University of Texas at Austin. The semester continued with UIL Concert/Sightreading Contest in April at Hays PAC. McCallum was represented by 5 choirs, four of which were awarded the Sweepstakes Award for excellence in Concert performance and Sightreading performance. These included the Boys Choir, the two Advanced Girls Choirs and the Mixed Choir. The JV Girls Choirs were awarded a First Division Rating in Sightreading and a Second Division Rating in Concert at the same contest. This is an outstanding representation for McCallum as McCallum was the only Austin ISD School to be represented by 5 choirs.

UIL Boys Choir

The final concert of the year will feature the choirs in a Pops concert in the MAC on May 14 at 7pm. The concert is free and will feature music of Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. Everyone is invited to hear our seniors for the last time.

The year will end with an exciting adventure to NYC and a performance at Lincoln Center. 65 members of the choir will depart from Austin on June 7, rehearse with internationally renowned clinician Rene Clausen, and perform in Alice Tully Hall on June 9. The choir will be featured in the Debut Series for the evening performing several songs alone before joining the larger mass choir of several schools from around the United States.

Congratulations to the Choral Department for such a great year.

Guitar News

Mother Falcon

The McCallum Chamber Guitar Ensemble, six-time winners of the UT Brownsville National Guitar Ensemble Competition, will open a benefit concert by Austin's own Mother Falcon, an eclectic band, on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 8pm in the new McCallum Arts Center, 5600 Sunshine Drive.

Mother Falcon is the natural choice for the opening of the McCallum Arts Center Emerging Artist Series. This innovative ensemble, which ranges from 10-20 musicians, features 10 McCallum Fine Arts Academy graduates. In 2011, the band won the Best "None of the Above" Award at the Austin Music Awards and brought down the house in the last set at that year's awards show. Alhambra, their new CD, was released in February 2012.

This benefit concert is the first in the McCallum Arts Center Emerging Artist Series. Proceeds will help send McCallum classical guitar students to this year's annual Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) International Convention and Competition in Charleston, South Carolina. The McCallum classical guitar students have been selected as a showcase ensemble from an accomplished list of national contestants. According to McCallum guitar teacher Andrew Clark, "Of the three age groups chosen, we are the only public school. We are honored to play at one of the largest and most prestigious international classical guitar festivals in the world." Find out how you can donate/help out.

Ben Verdery and the Classical Guitar Ensemble

The McCallum Chamber Guitar Ensemble also closed the annual ‘Ben and I Play For Peace’ fundraiser concert at Concordia University April 22nd. The ensemble performed acclaimed guitarist/Yale Professor Ben Verdery’s ‘Ellis Island’- conducted by Maestro Verdery and featuring a virtuosic electric guitar solo by the professor himself!

Piano News

A recital for Piano Ensembles will be held in the MAC on May 21st. Twelve pianos will be on the MAC stage for the student pianists....a first for the MAC.

Jeff Rudy accompanied all 5 McCallum choirs at this year's UIL Concert and Sightreading competition. Thank you, Mr. Rudy for stepping in to fill Ms. Wissinger's place due to her maternity leave. Mr. Rudy has been in consultation with two UT Butler School of Music professors, Dr. Martha Hilley and Dr. Ann Epperson to follow up with the Academy music faculty's goal of eventually offering a Collaborative Piano Major as part of the Fine Arts Academy. The partnership with the University of Texas College of Fine Arts plays a significant role in our work with fine arts students at McCallum.

Theatre Arts News

dr horrible poster

An adaption of a short film starring Neil Patrick Harris that became an Internet sensation, this show centers on Dr. Horrible, an aspiring supervillain with his own video blog. The bad doctor is attempting to join the prestigious Evil League of Evil (led by the legendary “thoroughbred of sin”, Bad Horse), but his plans are usually foiled by the egotistical superhero Captain Hammer. Horrible’s life is thrown for a loop when he falls in love with Penny, a beautiful and optimistic advocate for the homeless he meets at the laundromat, a situation which complicates itself even further when Penny begins dating the boorish, oafish Hammer after he apparently saves her life. Faced with the task of impressing the League, can Horrible overcome his own incompetence to ruin the day, kill the hero, and still get the girl? Rated PG

On Saturday, May 19 theatre presents Bully Awareness Show in the MAC. This is an all-day event.
