Austin Independent School District:
- 24,150 English Language Learners make up 28% of the student population
- 18,000 Elementary ELLs
- 3-6th grade students may take the TAKS test in Spanish
- 3,400 Middle School ELLs
- 2,750 High School ELLs
- 95% of the ELLs in AISD are Spanish-speaking
- 94 languages
- 75% are American Citizens and 25% are immigrant students. The majority of our ELLs are born in the U.S.
- Majority of ELLs are economically disadvantaged
- ELL students met all the Performance Based Monitoring Assessment System (PBMAS) indicators except for completion and graduation
Staff from the Office of Bilingual Education and the Department of Program Evaluation collaborated to summarize the 2006 TAKS performance of AISD former ELL students as compared with all AISD students.
