We recommend you create two images for your campus. One for your G3s and one for your G4s.
For this process you will need the following equipment and supplies:
Preparation
Test your custom image on your model computer to make sure it meets your needs and is stable. Test all accounts and all account preferences. Test both the OS X and 9.2 Classic modes. NOTE: Be sure to use Disk Utility to repair permissions on your model image computer before starting the cloning process. |
Step 1
Boot the Model Computer |
a. Plug the FW drive b. Boot this computer from its own hard drive, NOT the FW Drive. |
Step 2
Launch CCC |
a. Launch Carbon Copy Cloner
Step 3
CCC Settings |
a. Change the CCC settings to match these:
b. Your Source Disk should be the one containing your Model Image. c. Your Target Disk should be your FW Drive. |
Step 4
CCC Preferences |
a. Open the CCC Preferences Window and change its settings to match these:
b. "Repairing permissions before cloning," will make sure that your Model Image has no permissions problems that could slow down performance and/or cause flakey operation. Yes, it appears that you are repairing permissions again, but better safe than sorry. c. "Create a disk image on target," will clone your Model Image onto your FW drive as an image as apposed to completely replacing everything on the drive with your Model Image. d. "Prepare for Apple Software Restore," (ASR) makes your image work with NetRestore. e. The "read-only compressed" Format will create an image that takes up less space on your FW drive. f. Don't worry about the psync box matching your screen. g. Save your changes to CCC Preferences. |
Step 5
Begin Cloning Process |
a. Click the Lock b. The Clone button should now be activated. c. Following successful cloning you should now have an exact duplicate of your "Model" computer saved as a .dmg image on your FW drive. |
Step 6
Rename and move your costom image |
a. Locate the new customized image you just created. It will be located in the root directory of your FW drive. Drag this file to the installs folder in your OS X partition or other suitable location.
b. TRICKY PART: You may get the message that this file is owned by Root and/or you do not have enough access privilages to complete this operation. Not to worry.
c. Now try dragging this file to the Installs folder in this same partition if you were not successful before. d. Rename this image file using a unique name denoting when it was created and which image it is. Be sure to include the dmg extension. Example: cook_iMac_build_12.15.03.dmg WARNING: Use no special characters or spaces in the name of this file. |
Step 7
Repeat this whole process for your your G4 custom image.
