Software Compatibility with OS 10.3.4

General Comments

When installing software for student use, we highly recommend installing this software while logged in to the student desktop. This will normally require administrative rights for the student login. The best time to do this is when building your campus image or immediately following reimaging. The student account in the district image has full administrative rights to aid in this installation process. Following any modifications, be sure to turn off administrative rights for the student account and set limitations to turn off dock modifications, some system preferences and the ability to change the password for the student account.

There is a problem running some older software that require 256 colors on the eMacs. If run on an iMac the programs will offer to change the resolution and color depth for you and will remain at 256 colors as long as Classic is running. The eMacs don't support 256 colors though, so it won't work correctly, if at all.

The external USB Floppy drives seem to have issues with Panther and read floppies correctly only about 33% of the time.

Native OS 10.3.3
General Comments: The district image basically contains no applications that use the Classic mode. We are encouraging teachers and students to use as many native OS X applications as possible. This will improve reliability and allow for better upgrade maintenance.
Lotus Notes 6.5 This version runs in OS X natively. Note: Version 5.011 runs in Classic Mode.
Microsoft Office 10.1.5 Runs in OS X. Note: Installing both Office for OS 9 and OS X will cause problems in opening files.
Inspiration 7.5 Runs in either classic mode or natively.
KidSpiration 2.0 Runs in OS X.

Appleworks 6.2.9 Runs in either classic mode or natively.
Canon Scanners (Mobile Carts) These run native in OSX using CanoScan X and GraphicConverter is set as the default graphics program for editing scanned images.

Classic Mode OS 9.2.2
General Tips:
Type To Learn Current version runs in Classic Mode. OS X Native version due Mid 2004. To install this SW, log in as student first.
KidPix Studio Deluxe 3.0 This program requires 256 colors. eMacs do not support this resolution. KidPix will not run correctly on eMacs.
Version 4 that runs in native mode is due mid 2004.

Again, Login as Student to install this software.
HyperStudio ver. 3.3 This application runs in Classic Mode. There are no plans to upgrade this application. It's use is being phased out due to compatibility issues with PCs and the high cost of upgrades.

It does run in Classic Mode
Read 180 This application runs in Classic Mode. Note that students need to log in to the server again when the Classic Mode is launched.
Accelerated Reader This application currently runs in Classic Mode. Version 6.3 will run in Native Mode. For those with current license, this is a free upgrade. You need to be logged in as student to install this SW correctly.

NOTE: Upgrade to 6.3 with caution. Once you update your database, computers with the older version of AR will not be able to access the database.
Jump Start Currently does not work in Classic Mode.
Social Studies Curriculum Support SW Runs in classic mode. Currently no patch available for OS X.

Wiggle Works Runs in Classic Mode. Note: We have not yet gotten it to record speech, though this feature works with Kid Pix, and the guy at Scholastic I talked to says WW recording should work. Campuses need to download a new installer for WW espanol.
Class XP The latest version of ClassXP runs in OSX Native mode.
